In the beginning

It all started one cold Friday evening when Rileycat meowed outside our door and came to live with us. Of course, this six month old kitten didn't know he was a Rileycat but as soon as he made himself comfortable in a beanbag he knew from that day onwards he would be living the life of riley - hence his name Riley, aka Rileycat.

  1. It was a Friday evening at a block of uninteresting flats in Oadby, Leicester. I was pottering around - our front door was on the first floor, and to reach it you had to open the main outside door and climb two flights of steps. Anyway, from outside the flat's door came a plaintive meow, which echoed around the hallway. Opening the door, I saw this scrap of a tabby-and-white kitten.

At first I was sure that one of the three children had planted this little creature, but being a cat lover I picked him up and brought him inside. Nobody would admit (even today) that the kitten had been deliberately put there, and all we had to give him to eat was a tin of pilchards.

These didn't touch the sides on the way down, and the little kitten clearly decided that he was onto a good thing. He was put in one of the kids' bean bags and promptly disappeared into a nest he made in it.

We tried asking all round to see if anyone had lost him, but nothing came to light. As to what to call him, some daft ideas were being suggested, but someone said, looking at this highly contented tabby ball sleeping unconcernedly in his oversize bed - "You know, that cat lives the Life of Riley". So that was how he acquired his name.
